Product Description

CHI KUNG (qigong) means "energy work," the ancient Chinese yogic art that cultivates man's intrinsic internal energy, or vital life force--which the Chinese call "chi" (qi). For centuries, Qigong has been practiced for healing, rejuvenation and longevity―and is the foundation of all systems of Chinese martial, healing, and spiritual arts. Chi Kung For Health is a ground-breaking DVD series by Terry Dunn (creator of Tai Chi For Health dvd’s) that teaches the very rare and powerful "Flying Phoenix Celestial Healing Chi Meditations"--a remarkable system of medical qigong (there are also martial styles of Qigong, which this is not). It was created more than 400 years ago by legendary Taoist sage Feng Tao Teh of Ehrmei Mountain (Omeishan) in Szechuan Province who traveled extensively throughout China's western frontier and Tibet to acquire his yogic knowledge. This rare and powerful healing art has been impeccably preserved by seven generations of Taoist martial arts masters, and is now available to the public--as a precise, safe, and dynamic program for natural health, healing and illumination. It is comprised of standing and seated, stationary and moving exercises that impart profound health benefits: improved circulation, respiration, metabolism, skeletal strength, neuromuscular function and immunity. Flying Phoenix Qigong is ideal for beginners and advanced students alike because its exercises are simple and fool-proof, can be practiced safely without the supervision of a Qigong master, and yet they impart profound energizing and rejuvenating effects. Because of the deep state of physical relaxation and mind-body integration that it fosters, Flying Phoenix Qigong is also an excellent complement to Tai Chi practice, while being considerably easier to learn and practice. This wonderful hygienic art not only promotes splendid good health and longevity, but it as a complete classical Qigong system, it provides an invaluable foundation of experience by which one can fully understand and evaluate all methods of yoga and meditation. The five-volume DVD series is beautifully filmed by Mike Hoover. Terry Dunn’s expert, step-by-step instruction is enhanced by multiple camera angles and accompanied by transcendent musical scores by Robert Scott Thompson. VOLUME ONE teaches five basic standing meditations of the Flying Phoenix Celestial Healing Chi Mediation system. Through these easy-to-do standing meditations, Terry Dunn teaches beginners the three cornerstones of qigong: Shape-form (Xing), Mind or Intent (Yi), and breath (Chi). Three basic quiet, stationary standing meditations focus qi development at three corresponding chakras or energy centers: “Monk Gazing At Moon”--the third eye, “Monk Holding Peach”--the heart, “Monk Holding Pearl” –the lower tan tien. They are followed by two dynamic moving meditations that concentrate and circulate qi flow through the entire body: “Bending the Bows” musters energy from the extremities and channels it through what in Chinese medicine and acupuncture theory are called the Conception Vessel (Jen Mo) and Governing Channel (Tu Mo); “Wind Above the Clouds” perfects physical balance and flexibility by strengthening the waist, opening the hips, regulating qi flow to the legs and arms by symmetrical bending and stretching movements. Each Flying Phoenix exercise consists of a safe and easy “breath-control sequence” performed once, followed by a classical Qigong posture that is either stationary or involves movement. Every practitioner of Flying Phoenix Qigong without fail experiences profound energizing and rejuvenating effects that are tangible, repeatable and verifable.(60 min.)

Review

Review of Chi Kung For Health, Vols 1-4, by Solala Towler, Editor of Empty Vessel, Journal of Contemporary Taoism: This video series by the well-known qigong instructor, Terry Dunn, takes you step by step through the "Flying Phoenix Heavenly Healing Chi Meditations", a part of the martial art, White Tiger Kung-fu, which is attributed to the Taoist monk Feng Do Duk, a legendary healer from Ehrmei Mountain in Szechuan province. He passed on the art to the ancestors of the Doo family in 1644. As in most complete qigong schools, which usually include a standing, a sitting as well as moving forms, this DVD series spans six volumes. The first, called Five Basic Standing Exercises, consists of five standing meditations, each with distinct postures and breathing patterns. the video includes side views and panels explaining the breathing patterns and allowing us to view Terry's movements from different angles. It is said in the qigong world that to build qi you need to do standing meditation. Here we can learn five different ways to do that. Each meditation uses various hand and body postures with poetic names such as Monk Holding the Pearl, Monk Gazing At the Moon, Monk Holding the Peach, and Bending the Bows, the cornerstone basic moving meditation of the Flying Phoenix Qigong System. In the second volume, called Six Seated meditations, you are taught six different seated meditations. Three are basic, warm-up meditations just as powerful as the three "Monk Serves Wine" meditations that follow. These meditations again use hand and upper body postures first practiced in Volume One. We are taught basic breathing for meditation and then led slowly through various hand and body postures. The first three can be done singly for at least five minutes. The last three should be done sequentially in sets of seven repetitions for each exercise. Volume Three is called Two Intermediate Standing Exercises and teaches two esoteric moving meditations called "Wind Through Treetops" and "Moonbeam Splashes On Water" which bear faint resemblance to Tai Chi forms but are practiced three times slower than normal Tai Chi form speed. They are comparatively much shorter choreographies. Building on what we learned in Volume One of the 5 basic standing exercises, we are led through these simple yet powerful qigong forms. Terry guides us through the form in several creative ways, using different angles, including an overhead, so that we may view the movements from every way. Volume Four of the series teaches the capstone exercise of the Flying Phoenix Qigong system that also bears the formal Chinese name of this art: "Flying Phoenix Heavenly Healing Chi Meditation." It is also referred to as the "Advanced Long Form Meditation." Once it is memorized, this powerful and sublime exercise subsumes the practice of all the preceding Standing Meditations in Volumes 1 and 3. Like all preceding standing moving meditations, the capstone exercise is done entirely with the eyes closed, Building on what we learned in Volume One and Three’s standing exercises, we are led through this simple yet powerful qigong form. Terry guides us through the form in several creative ways, using different angles, including an overhead, so that we may view the movements from every way. *Because of the great interest in qigong in the West, it is important to have available bona fide teachings by bona fide teachers. Too often students end up learning a little bit of this form and a little bit of another, while never learning any complete system. This series is a good example of a serious and gifted instructor who offers a complete system of qigong to the serious student. --The Empty Vessel, Journal of Contemporary Taoism

2 reviews by LLoyd McClelland of Orlando, FL, who started the "Flying Phoenix Chi Kung" discussion thread in Dec. 2009 on the The Dao Bums blog-site after enjoying the profound energizing and rejuvenating effects of FP Qigong from using Chi Kung For Health DVD series. The lively worldwide discussion forum that Mr. McClelland started is now in its 13th year with 660,000 views: Posted 04 December 2009 - 08:27 PM: I am wondering if anyone else has practiced this system? Specifically, I am referring the the Chi Kung for Health Series by Sifu Terry Dunn. I have been practicing qigong for about 7 years now. I have dabbled in a number of styles of qigong, but mostly have stuck to the basics. I tried the Flying Phoenix system about 2 years ago, and for some reason the breathing sequence just didn't feel right for me. So, I discontinued. However, about 6 weeks ago, I scheduled a private conversation with Sifu Dunn to discuss the system. I was prepared with a number of questions. The conversation cleared a few things up that I was not quite clear on regarding the practice. Sifu Dunn was very informative and displayed genuine enthusiasm for this style of qigong, BTW. Then, I gave this system another try. It rocks! I hesitate to discuss a Qigong system I have only practiced for 6 weeks, however, I think this is worth a post. Also, I have an 7 year frame of reference. • Flying Phoenix is seriously the most powerful qigong I have practiced. For me, it generates so much qi, that I have to limit how much I do per day, as my body is still getting used to the amount of energy created with this practice. • The secret sauce here is the breathing sequences to begin each exercise. Master Dunn told me he had to get permission from his master to teach these methods. The breathing, followed by the movements of the system have provided quite astounding effects for me. Posted 10 July 2010 - 05:36 PM: Sifu Terry - At your suggestion, I will relate my experience of doing FP at the 7 month mark: – Increased sexual energy. Seems some other posters have had this same experience. – Improved digestion - I love to eat spicy-hot food, even though it doesn't agree with me. Since I have been practicing FP I have far fewer effects from this. (Yah I know. I should probably just stop eating spicy food.....but I don't see that happening.) – Improved condition of skin - I have classic pale Irish American skin and have spent too much time in the sun. So for the past 7 or 8 years, I have been in the Dermatologist's office 4 or 5 times a year to have seborrheic keratoses removed. New ones would pretty much surface and grow all the time and required constant trips to the doctor to have them removed. I have not had to visit the Dermatologist once since I started FP. This is really a tangible sign of the healing qualities of FP!! – Improved, younger looking complexion - this has been noted by a number of people, which as I've stated once before is great since I'm 55 years old. ;-) – Balancing effect from stresses of the day - I am a businessman and work 12 hours every day, often with travel. I find doing FP Seated #2 (50 30 10) just before bedtime to be excellent for de-stressing, which allows me to sleep soundly. (I remember you saying the first of the Advanced Seated FP (50 20 10) is also good for sound sleep and I can confirm it does, however, I am usually doing Seated #2 as this works for me.) – In general, I have found doing the FP exercises in the exact sequence as you have demonstrated on your DVD's to be the most effective for me. I do as many as time allows every day. I can distinguish the feel of the FP Qi to be different than the Qi generated by other qigong practices. It seems lighter, it's direction seems to move from lower abdomen to the head, it is more healing than anything I have experienced before. 3 Amazon dot com reviews: 1.) Dan H. Miller 5.0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-follow and effective Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2005. Verified Purchase I have found these Chi Kung exercises easy-to-follow and very effective at increasing an awareness of chi and its flow. Terry's explanations and demonstrations are very clear, and he takes the instruction at a nice, leisurely pace. The production of the DVD is excellent, also. Chi Kung is much easier to learn from a video, than Tai Chi, and produces benefits quickly. The only addition to Terry's instruction that I would like to have seen is something about the more "esoteric" elements of the movements. For example, when your hands pass near certain areas of the body, you are bringing fresh chi into those areas, in effect recharging them with energy, or redistributing energy. However, this is something you can intuit when you become adept at the movements. To help with learning the relationship between chi kung movements and this "recharging" with chi, I would recommend Wen-Mei Yu's book on chi kung. Studying this book will give you a good "feel" for how movements recharge the body with chi. All in all, Terry's are the best chi kung video/DVDs I have seen. 2.) JUST DO IT, May 10, 2007 By Four Tusk Njoku; (Philadelphia, USA) - This is a great practice for body, mind and spirit. It is holy; it is healthful; it is scientific. Yet, there are no words. Just do the movements, memorize the movements, do the breathing exercises before. You will get to know your body and mind like the back of your hand and have access to reserves of energy. You will radiate it like the sun to others around you Do not argue, do not think. Just do, and you will see results. How did the ancient Chinese discover this?! 3.) Cihan 5.0 out of 5 stars very useful for increasing physical energy levels and inner spiritual work September 10, 2011 This is in fact about the complete DVD series, Chi Kung for Health by Sifu Terence Dunn I am 49 years old and have some yoga and taichi background. When I came across these series a year ago, I was amazed to see for the first time very noticeable increase in my energy levels in a very short practice span, like a week. I havr been doing at least one exercise a day since then, and dropped almost all of other practices as I found these series very satisfactory replacement for that kind of energy work. The series is: -Very simple to follow and straightforward to learn from a DVD -Very energizing. You actually rest while doing the exercises with minimum effort, and when you start doing them right (you figure it out easy by the energy output) each stance is like a dynamo generating and cycling lots of good energy in your body. Some of my muscles was used actively for the first time, so I had a little fatigue after some exercises in the beginning, but it passed after about 2 weeks. -Promoting real health. For 7 months, I did the exercises daily with another mild half-hour work out that I had been doing for years, and did not even sneeze once during this period. Then I had to drop the workout, but continued doing these exercises, flus started again, but my recovery times are much shorter now, and my chronic migraine disappeared, hopefully forever.I seriously recommend doing these exercises with a mild physical work out as they supplement each other and really boost the immune system. -An excellent solid road to walk into inner spiritual work. These are not just physical exercises, that's why I believe you get results you are looking for rather quickly. Sifu Terry Dunn has excellent support for all of my questions on line, and there is a nice documentation covering almost every aspect of the system you can find on an internet forum. Just google it. --amazon listing of Chi Kung For Health, Volume 1
